On December 7, 2016, Prem Rawat was enthusiastically received by an audience of over 1800 people at the Regina Mundi Church in Soweto, South Africa.
Regina Mundi, often referred to as “the people’s church”, is the largest Roman Catholic church in South Africa, and is particularly renowned as a center where people gathered during the anti-apartheid struggles. The church still bears the signs of shootings that occurred during the Soweto uprising of June 16, 1976 when many who had fled to the church seeking shelter were injured.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu presided over several meetings of the Truth and Reconciliation meetings held at the facility in the mid-1980s, and Nelson Mandela has spoken at the church.
In one portion of his address, Prem Rawat spoke about the futility of revenge, and that the power of forgiveness is the way to true freedom. He offered encouragement, saying, “Your heart is full of hope. Open it!”
